Ajamu X (Hons FRPS) is a darkroom/fine art photographic artist, and archival curator. He is the co-founder of rukus! Federation and the rukus! Black LGBTQ +Archive. His photographs are rooted in celebrating the black queer body, the erotic senses, pleasure, and embodied acts in making. Through his visual philosophy/aesthetics he rubs up against (literally and metaphorically) the tendency to flatten the work of black queer photographers to simple notions of identity-thinking and representation, instead foregrounding the sensual and material attributes of the photographic ‘act’, process, and production.
His work has been exhibited across museums, galleries, and alternative spaces in the UK and internationally. In 2025, Tate published a monograph on his practice as part of its photographic series.
