Carmen Winant
Fall of the Modern Empire (test), 2021
Paper Size: 11x22 inches
Edition of 1
Unique print on newspaper produced and signed by the artist.

This work is one of a series of tests that I made while creating a serial work called The Fall of The Modern Empire. For it, I was experimenting with the very delicate process of printing on newsprint. Specifically, The New York Times. I was scouring the paper for stories that centered women's bodies and their degrading rights; I would then print images on top from a found book of childbirth. The process was experimental and full of technical problems that needed to be ironed out. The resulting pictures – I think of them as one picture merged together – are surprising in ways I couldn't have predicted.
