This image is one in a series of eight large-scale photocopies originally displayed on the facade of the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, BC. The work mutually implicates the small rocks and my hand as tools to measure each other. Invoking the practice in geological survey photographs to include small objects in frame to indicate scale, these works stage by proxy the relationship between human bodies and land, and the asymmetry of their impacts on one another.

Dionne Lee is an artist working across various mediums including photography, collage, and video. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art, Storm King Art Center, Swiss Institute, Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Barbican, among others. Lee’s work was included in the 2024 Whitney Biennial and, in 2025, the 12th SITE SANTA FE International. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Center for Photography at Woodstock (2019), Light Work (2021), and the Chinati Foundation (2022). Her first monograph, Currents, published by Aperture, is out now. She is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow.
